It’s done! It’s here! And I’m so excited to share… Here is the cover for “Flight of an Orphan Thief”, my young adult fantasy debut novel coming out March 20 this year:
How it came about
As mentioned in my last post “Book Cover Design: Where to begin?“, the options were numerous and almost overwhelming. I ended up working with Miblart.com because they give you the option to only pay at the end of the process if you are satisfied with the result and their pricing struck me as reasonable.
I asked for a cover that matched the YA fantasy genre, i.e. with a focus on the title and no characters portrayed. Based on the story, I gave some additional guidance and named key elements I wanted to see on the cover, and then they got to work.
It took longer than I expected, and involved some frustrations, but I love the final cover – and that’s what matters!
Pros and cons of Miblart.com
In my experience and opinion, here are the pros and cons of working with the platform I chose:
Advantages: You don’t pay a cent until you’re satisfied, the fee is relatively low compared to other options I got quotes for – but still high enough that it doesn’t feel like they are abusing their designers, and they were recommended by my editor which to me meant that they had a seal of approval by professionals which was reassuring.
Disadvantages: They only proposed one design (rather than giving me 2-3 options to choose from up front), the turnaround time between my feedback and the next iteration of the design was unpredictable, a few times I had to reaffirm a change request as it seemed to have gotten lost in translation or ignored.
The million dollar question is, would I use them again?
If I am being honest, the answer is probably not. Not because I am inherently dissatisfied with their work, but because I am curious about alternatives and wasn’t so so over the moon with them that I feel it is justified to give them my unwavering loyalty.
Most importantly, I HAVE A BOOK COVER! *happy dance*
